Chapter Eleven

Lux

The rest of the morning gave way to furious lovemaking, punctuated by brief respites curling together and staring at one another. Lux could see the resistance, occasionally, furrowing Hailey’s brow, but he quickly melted her concerns away. More than once, he mapped her body with his fingers, learning every inch and curve of her. In turn, her fingers moved along his skin, exploring nips and scars. Occasionally, he shared a story or two: that time he’d fallen out of the treehouse… a hot tub related tumble…

Likewise, she pointed out a spot on her knee where she had been bitten by a dog when she was twelve.

“I ended up in a tree, waiting for the dog to get bored, but he barked at me for hours!”

“Bad dog!” Lux scolded.

“Cruel, vicious dog.”

And their lips were together again.

By the time they returned to the shore, both of them had a bit of a tan and more than a slight flush in their cheeks. From there, they carried on at one of Slivadovia’s most famous restaurants, with the dining room emptied for security purposes (and for the purpose of impressing Hailey) the two of them ate the chef’s special roasted quail with wild mushrooms in the quiet of an empty serving room.

Afterward, they went back to her old hotel room to take advantage of the private space and available bed.

Lux had almost forgotten that he had promised to be back after dinner for Maeve, but Hailey, her mind a steel trap for details, reminded him just as the sun began to set, and they took a break long enough to head home and play a board game with Maeve before bed.

Directly after, they went to their separate rooms. Lux felt as though there was a fire just below his skin, threatening to envelop him. As he changed his clothes, he thought of Hailey’s perfect, teardrop-shaped breasts. As he freshened up in the bathroom, he remembered the feel of her ass and how it fits in his hand.

He left the bedroom, confident and almost smug, and headed to the library. Just before he entered, he waved to the guard at the end of the hallway (who waved back) and stepped inside. He didn’t bother turning on the lights; he knew the way all too well and counted out the steps toward the bookcase that swung up. Lux triggered the door and slipped inside.

Moments later, he was in the hallway leading to Hailey’s guest room. She wasn’t as well guarded, for obvious reasons, and when he came to her door, it was open and waiting. Inside, she sat cross-legged in a wide, comfortable chair with her laptop perched on her knees. Although she had changed into a large, soft T-shirt and a pair of shorts, Hailey was as lovely as he’d ever seen her. Even with her hair bound messily on top of her head, Lux felt his chest tightening.

“Is this the famous castle ghost I’ve heard of, or are you just happy to see me?” Hailey teased, not even looking up from her screen.
